Noah - the Movie versus Noah - Scriputural Story

By Barbara Parker

We’ve probably all seen the new movie about Noah.  I was a tad bit disappointed because they hadn’t followed what the scriptures say about the incident. There seemed to be a large amount of poetic license taken with the incident, to the point that I barely recognized the story at all. I went back to the bible narrative of Noah’s adventure. This is what I discovered.

Scripture says that Noah was 500 when God decided to flood the earth and destroy most of Mankind. God was unhappy with people because they were violent and every imagination of their minds was evil. He decided to save Noah, his wife, and his sons and daughters in-law to start the whole population over again. When the flood came, Noah was 600 years of age. It may have taken Noah nearly 100 years to build his boat, considering its finished size. All he had for help were his three sons and wife.

Noah’s ark was to be 450 ft. x 75 ft. x 45 ft. A football field is 100 yards or 300 ft. The boat would have been a foot ball field and a half long. At 45 feet high we have 3 stories according to Scripture.  It contained rooms. Amplified Bible says stalls, pens, coops, nests, cages, and compartments. It was built out of gopher or cypress wood. Noah covered it inside and out with pitch or bitumen.

Gen. 6:16 says it was to have a window 18 inches above, and a door in the side which God himself closed 7 days before the rain started. The movie depicts Noah closing the door as the rain is falling and nearly drowning in the process.

Noah took on the ark all of the animals God directed plus Noah, his wife and three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japeth, along with their three wives.

According to the movie only one son has a wife. The other two sons have to wait for her to give birth to twin baby girls and for them to grow up before they can have wives.

Scripture says that after Noah turned 500 he became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japeth. They may actually have been triplets. It isn’t real clear.

Scripture says that Shem was 98 when he boarded the boat. The movie depicts Japeth as about 12.

According to scripture there were 8 of them that boarded the boat. The movie only shows six. The movie-Noah thinks God wants to destroy all mankind, including him and his family. The Bible-Noah had spoken with God and knew he planned to save Noah’s family to repopulate the earth.

It rained 40 days and nights. Also the fountains of the deep were broken up and the windows and flood gates of heaven were opened. The canopy of the earth came down. According to scientists who study the flood, losing the canopy would have changed the climate of the planet bringing about the 4 seasons, one being winter. The earth had never experienced winter before. It was warm with lush vegetation clear to the poles.
Noah was 601 when he exited the ark. Scripture says the whole earth was dry by then. He and his family had occupied the ark for a year and 10 days. The ark came to rest on Mount Ararat in Armenia.

Noah lived another 350 years for a total of 950 years.  If you total up the years in his genealogy in chapter 11, he may still have been alive at the time of Abraham.
